A Behind the Scenes Look
We are constantly getting questions about what products we use in our day-to-day lives in the RV, so I’m going to blog about some of our favorites over the summer. These are all items that we have found and decided to give a try based on recommendations from others. If there is something you think we should try, please leave us a comment and let us know!
Getting on the Copper Wagon
By now, you’ve probably seen the infomercials for the copper colored cookware of all sizes and variations. I noticed these in particular since I am actively looking to replace my scratched non-stick pans with a new set that can be used on gas as well as inductions burners. I wanted to start with something relatively inexpensive to see if the hype was warranted.
What We Got
We purchased The Yoshi Copper Grill & Bake Mats to give them a try on our new fire pit at our home base. I bought a cooking grate to cover the fire pit so we could grill on it, but the thought of scouring a 3′ x 3′ grate each time we grilled has been more than a little daunting to me. So when I found these grill mats, I knew I had to give them a try. There were 2 mats in the box and the only warning that pertained to our situation was not to use them close to open flame.
What We Did
I put the mat on the center of our cooking grate and then arranged the burgers and hot dogs directly on the mat (no oil/spray). Note: There did not appear to be an “up” side to the mat, although we looked and re-read the directions. We cooked the hamburgers to the correct temperature using a meat thermometer (my restaurant owning parents were very pleased) and the hot dogs until they were black per my brother’s request.
There was nothing unusual about the grilling process, although we did not get the grill marks on the food, the flavor was still that of being cooked on an open fire. It was easy to flip the burgers and hot dogs – no food sticking to the grate or getting burned on. Once removed from the heat, the mat cooled off very quickly and was easily carried to the sink for cleaning.
The mat cleaned up very well with just soap and water – no scrubbing required. I store it rolled up in my drawer with our grilling utensils.
Overall Verdict
Easy to use and cleaning was a snap – definitely recommend especially if you are traveling and want to use a public grill or, like me, don’t want to have to clean a huge grate each time you grill.
author’s note: I will update this review if anything changes in my opinion about this product.
